BATON ROUGE, La. (BRPROUD) — An investigation by the Baton Rouge Police Department ended with one man in custody on Monday, March 11. He was apprehended after a traffic stop on Choctaw Drive.
Davant Whitehead, 33, of New Orleans was charged with illegal carrying of weapons with CDS, possession of drug paraphernalia, and penalty for distribution or possession with intent to distribute narcotic drugs listed in schedule I.
BRPD responded “to a disturbance involving firearms” on Monroe Avenue, according to the affidavit. While on the way, officers learned that Whitehead was attempting to get away in a Jeep Wagoneer.
Officers found the vehicle on N. Acadian Thruway stopped at a light at Choctaw Drive, BRPD said. That is where the stop was performed and two people were put in handcuffs. One of those people was Whitehead and the second was a female passenger.
Police said there were juveniles inside the vehicle at the time of the stop and officers could smell marijuana.
Whitehead told officers that he had smoked marijuana minutes before being stopped.
A search of the vehicle uncovered marijuana and guns. BRPD listed what was found in the vehicle.
- multiple individually wrapped bags of marijuana.
- two grinders.
- two scissors.
- three guns.
- one bowl.
- one package of “Backwoods All Natural Leaf Wrapper.”
Whitehead confirmed that all items found during the search were his, according to the affidavit.
The New Orleans man was booked into the East Baton Rouge Parish Prison on Tuesday, March 12. He was released from jail on a $11,530 bond.
