DAYTON, Ohio (WKEF) — Recreational marijuana use is now legal in Ohio, but on some university campuses, it’s not.
For both Wright State University and the University of Dayton, policy has not changed. Any marijuana possession or use is still strictly prohibited on both campuses because the universities receive federal funding.

In messages sent out to students and staff, both UD and Wright State said marijuana possession and usage is still illegal federally. Since the universities receive federal funding, they must follow federal laws.
“To some people, it could be distracting,” said Wright State Freshmen, Rubi Vega. “The smell is very distinct.”
Some students, Vega, told Dayton 24/7 Now’s Gwyneth Falloon they understand why the universities continue to prohibit marijuana on campus, but said they would be open to a policy change.
“Maybe the university could work on some outside spaces, in a controlled environment,” Vega suggested. “It could be helpful for people who are in a situation where it does help them function on a day-to-day basis.”
Others, such as Jack Pacheco, said prohibiting marijuana on campus isn’t a bad thing.
“The university doesn’t need a bunch of people walking around and smoking weed,” he stated. “They can make their own policies. I think it makes sense.”
But, some worried completely restricting it could cause more problems. Wright State Freshman Joshua Serrano believed people are going to find ways around the policy regardless.
“I believe in freedom and people having the option to make their own decisions, especially when it comes to what they’re putting in their body and are adults,” said Serrano.
However, just to be clear, both UD and Wright State said their policy has not changed.
Students and staff are not allowed to possess or use marijuana on campus. Those who violate that policy could face expulsion or termination.
