It's mother nature !.. Bringing it into science is not wrong but it shouldn't be tampered with.. but that is exactly how pills came about and other narcotics that have been created, Willow trees is one. And with That' said, archeology as well science, does back the use of "cannabis", all the way back to the birth of the Bible and it's 3 times ..It was a seed given to us just like planting a grape vinnards to harvest grapes and produce wine. Science will only destroy it and mislead people. It should be respected and handled with knowledge and understanding .
Dr. Simpson, I take issue with your statement about opiates. While addiction rates are high, not everyone who has chronic pain is subject to opiate addiction. Research clearly shows that there are people who simply lack the neural pathways for opiate addiction.
And, certainly anecdotally, different people react to different opiates differently. I've been on 2 different opiates, each of which make members of my family high, but don't make me high at all. For that matter, even high doses of Xanax have no noticeable effect on me, though I respond pretty typically to other benzodiazepines.
My general point is that all drugs should be legalized for adults, with only drugs in short supply, like certain vaccines at certain times, or antibiotics being rationed by physicians. Someone like me, for whom opiates treat pain extremely well, but who's seldom even used prescriptions I received, shouldn't have to stockpile it in case we really have pain one day and a stingy/scared doctor refuses to treat our pain properly. I should be able to go to a pharmacy and obtain any drug I want that isn't subject to rationing for demonstrably good reasons.
This is especially true of drugs that we know some patients will have to take permanently. One example is the NSAID drops my mother takes to prevent rejection of her cornea transplants. I can't imagine why such drops require a prescription in the first place, but for my mother to have to sometimes make a doctor visit just to get a refill is absurd.
